How ENT Specialists Address Chronic Ear Infections

Ear infections are common, and many clear up within a few days. When an infection keeps returning or never fully resolves, it becomes a chronic problem that needs closer attention. Ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialists are trained to evaluate and manage these stubborn cases. They look beyond the symptoms to find the underlying cause, and treat each case based on what they find.

    Physical Exams

An ENT specialist starts by reviewing the patient’s history, including how often infections occur and how long each one lasts. This history helps separate a series of unrelated infections from a single ongoing problem.

Next comes a direct look inside the ear. The specialist uses an otoscope, a lighted tool, to examine the ear canal and eardrum. Signs of fluid, swelling, redness, or a perforated eardrum can all point to sources of infection.

Additional tests may follow when the cause is not clear. These can include the following:

    • Tympanometry, which measures how the eardrum responds to changes in air pressure and detects fluid behind it.
    • Hearing tests, which check whether the infection has affected hearing.
    • Cultures, which identify the specific bacteria when an infection resists standard treatment.

The exam gives the specialist a better picture of the problem before prescribing treatment.

    Medical Treatments

Antibiotics are often prescribed when bacteria are involved. Antibiotic ear drops can also deliver medication directly to the affected area, which is helpful when the eardrum is perforated. Specialists often advise taking anti-inflammatory medications to help with pain and inflammation. Steroid medications can lower inflammation in some cases, but specialists will review best options for each individual case.

Managing related conditions is another part of the plan. Allergies, sinus problems, and nasal congestion can all contribute to fluid buildup in the ear. Treating these issues often reduces infections.

    Surgical Options

Surgery can be effective when other approaches have not worked. The most common procedure is the placing of ear tubes. A surgeon makes a small opening in the eardrum and inserts a tiny tube. This tube allows fluid to drain and air to get into the middle ear, which reduces the conditions that lead to infection. The procedure is brief and often recommended for patients with continous recurrences.

Other surgical options address more advanced problems. A myringoplasty or tympanoplasty repairs a hole in the eardrum that has not healed on its own. In cases where infection has damaged the bone or spread to nearby structures, a mastoidectomy can remove infected tissue.

    Schedule an ENT Appointment

Chronic ear infections rarely resolve on their own, and ongoing infections can affect your hearing over time. If you or a family member has dealt with repeated ear infections or an infection that will not clear, a specialist can help.

Start by scheduling an evaluation. Bring a record of past infections and any treatments you have already tried. Ask about the test results and what they mean for your options. With a clear diagnosis, you can work with your specialist on a plan that addresses the cause and lowers the risk of future infections.
